Characteristics of Mattresses at High-End Hotels

  • High quality material guests can be immediately associated with luxury

Some of the most common types of mattresses used by 5-Star luxury hotels are innerspring, memory foam, or hybrid mattresses. There are many other types of mattresses including waterbed, air-mattress, gel-infused, latex, pillow-top, and adjustable bed types. Below you will find a more thorough explanation of each type of mattress used by hotels.

Innerspring mattresses
Utilize a steel coil support system which is covered by upholstery. Typically, the more coils, the more effective the mattress is at relieving pressure. This type of mattress may provide more ventilation than other types of mattresses which can provide a cooler sleeping experience and in turn can be a more desirable mattress for warm sleepers.

Memory foam mattresses
Are composed of high-density polyurethane foam in the supportive layer and/or over the top of the supportive layer. This type of material tends to resist movement because the foam contours to the shape of the sleeper however due to the nature of polyurethane, the material may be too warm for some sleepers.

Hybrid mattresses
For hotels, this usually means a mix of both innerspring and memory foam. This type of mattress contains the steel coil system and high-density foam (memory foam, viscoelastic, or latex). This type of mattress may be the most versatile for all sleepers.

  • Firmness and thickness of the layers of a mattress

Most high-end hotels invest in medium to high firm mattresses which are more durable and tend to be preferred by a wide variety of guests. The firmness of a mattress contributes to a mattresses durability and includes the base layer and comfort layers combined. The base layer is at least 6 inches and most high-quality mattresses are between 8-20 inches thick which means the comfort layer is at least 10+ inches.

  • Accessories and finishing touches

Mattress toppers are used by five-star hotels to add an extra layer of comfort which also enhances how the mattress performs. Next, hotels use a flat sheet instead of a fitted sheet to perform the ‘hospital corners’ technique which creates a crisper and more elegant impression. Finally, the thread count of the sheets is another aspect of the sleeping environment that high-end hotels do not ignore.

  • Some luxury hotel chains have their own mattress line and some have partnerships with mattress manufacturers.

Luxury Hotels with Their Own Mattress Lines

Marriot International, Inc. which owns and operates a number of hotel chains (Sheraton, Ritz-Carlton, Westin) and Hotels at Home, Inc. have created a branded merchandise program. This partnership has simplified the process of locating a desired mattress or sleep accessory based on the specific Marriot hotel you stayed at. The features of each mattress are somewhat similar.

Sheraton has developed a unique mattress feature with separate box springs for beds designed for more than one sleeper which helps reduce movement. Ritz-Carlton’s Sealy Posturpedic mattresses feature a detailed box spring. Fairfield by Marriot and the signature Marriot bed known as the “Marriot Bed” or the Marriot Hotel Bed, By Jamison” are composed of a soy-based comfort foam mattress with medium to firm support.

The W and Davenport Mattress is called the Helix Dawn Luxe mattress which is an innerspring mattress with cooling technology. Hilton and Doubletree use the Bear Hybrid mattress which has a 20 year warranty. The Sheraton and Westin hotels have been known to use the Alexander Signature Hybrid mattress which is medium firm.

The “Marriot Bed” is consistently rated as one of the most comfortable hotel mattresses and arguably one of the most popular mattresses in the world. This mattress is considered on of the best hotel mattresses to buy. The Marriot and Hyatt also use the WinkBed hybrid mattress which has been rated as the best innerspring mattress of 2021 by the New York Times Wirecutter.

The Four Seasons, known for providing an elaborate hotel experience and offers guests the opportunity to select a firmness rating. The Four Seasons also a has a custom mattress available for purchase. This mattress line allows for some flexibility with a zippered design which allows you to change the mattress topper from plush to firm to signature design depending on your sleep needs on any given night.

Luxury Hotels with Partnerships with Mattress Manufacturers

Disney has a collaboration with Beautyrest and together they have designed a pillow-top mattress available at Disney hotels. The Beautyrest mattress is also available online for purchase. The Beautyrest website can help your find the exact mattress you slept on by entering the name of the hotel you stayed at.

Serta and Hilton have collaborated to develop “Destination Home By Hilton” which is a retail destination which includes access to a signature line of innerspring mattresses and sleep accessories. Some items available to purchase include box springs, sheets, and bathrobes.

Some luxury hotels mattresses have partnerships with major retailers like Mattress Firm, Macy’s, Potterybarn, and Wayfair. You can search for the name of the mattress by researching the hotel you stayed at to find out if a retailer near you carries the mattress of your dreams. Before you buy the mattress, you may want to find the mattress in store first to try it out for comfort.

Conclusion: Hotel Mattresses are the Standard of Comfort

In general, luxury hotels are on top of the sleep industry standards and are ahead of the curve when it comes to locating and developing the most comfortable mattresses for their valued guests. Most five-star hotels seem to purchase or design the innerspring mattress type or hybrid design.
